Tolerance Education Centres

The Commission has created the Tolerance education network (TEN) by establishing 62 Tolerance Education Centres (TEC) in the secondary schools, NGOs and museums in 8 administrative units of Lithuania. The students, teachers and administration of 67 TEC are involved in the educational activities as teams.

TEC methodologically supervised by the Commission are mostly lead by teacher-trainers and have support from headmasters and administration of the schools. This support was guaranteed after the special seminars for headmasters and administration.

The representative survey of students attitudes towards crimes of totalitarian regimes (ordered by Genocide and Resistance Center of Lithuania; conducted in 2004) showed that the students from the Tolerance Education Centres have better knowledge of history, higher level of personal historical responsibility, more developed culture of remembrance and understanding of crimes against humanity, and more positive attitude towards minorities and ethnic groups.

TEC arrange educational activities for schools and local communities in the following directions:

q      Teach about the Holocaust and Soviet crimes in classes of different subjects by applying modern educational principles;

q       Organize conferences, seminars, discussions on human rights and historical themes;

q       Commemorate the victims of Holocaust and Soviet repressions; visit and look after the cemetery and memorial places;

q       Coordinate and participate in the national and international projects initiated by the Commission and other institutions.

What we’re trying to do is get kids to

 make a connection between history and today.
