Commission is a crucial part of democratization, respect for human rights, and strengthening civil society in Lithuania.
Commission seeks:
To conduct objective Researchand to fill in the existing gaps in the modern history of Lithuania and to help Lithuania to participate in the historical and sociological research which has been generated in the West during the last fifty years.
To Stimulate Processof historical justice and understanding of the origins of the crimes of Nazi and Soviet occupations and their subsequence on the states and societies of Europe as well to promote cooperation among local and international partners in achieving this difficult task.
To Educatesociety publicizing and disseminating the generated information, to inform citizens and students of all age groups about the Holocaust as well as the crimes committed by the Soviet regime, and their consequences for Lithuanian society and the international community.
To Consult national decision-making bodies on issues related to the Commission’s agenda; to influence a formulation of the objective official position on the historical questions which are the most painful, stereotyped and still uncovered.
