The events to commemorate the International Holocaust Remembrance Day took place in many Lithuanian cities

Under the initiative of the International Historical Commission 24 Lithuanian schools of various Lithuanian cities and regions commemorated the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The importance of the day was highlighted with the lessons, performances also film reviews presented by teachers. The Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum, the Lithuanian Jewish Community also took part in the commemoration. Here the International Holocaust Remembrance Day’s commemoration was organized together with the International Historical Commission.


The events of school communities

In the regions and cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevėžys, Utena, Radviliškis, Kėdainiai, Šiauliai ir Šiaulių rajonas, Ukmergė, Plungė, Tauragė, Alytaus, Trakų rajonai, Telšiai, Palanga the International Holocaust Remembrance Day was marked. Most events took part in the school communities.
The International Holocaust Remembrance Day was marked with the historical as well as educational lessons.

Two Lithuanian theatres presented few performances about the tragic destiny of Jews. The performance "Interview" took place in Telšiai theatre and the performance "Anna Frank. Always yours" was presented in Panevėžys Theatre. This is the second year as the performance "Anna Frank. Always yours" was showed to the audience. This nice tradition became attractive to many schools of Panevėžys city.


The conferences for the teachers took place in two Lithuanian cities Panevėžys and Kaunas. The other conference about the meaning of the 27th of January took part in Panevėžys. It was organized by Panevėžys Jewish Community. One more conference called "They are known from the Kaunas' streets" on Jewish historical and cultural heritage took place in Public Institution of Kaunas Julijanava Catholic Secondary School. The organizers of the conference were the teachers of the Tolerance Education Center.

For the 11 school communities the movies were shown. Afterwards the films were followed by debates. The videos watched were The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; Ambulance; The Ghetto of Panevėžys; The Pianist; Surviving history; Holocaust in Lithuania, „Because We are Jews“, „I leave you my child“. Few schools combined the theme of the movie with other educational tools.

The events in Tolerance Center
On January 25 and 26 two events took place in Tolerance Center, such as the educational event and „Comedian vs. dictator“.

The participants of the educational event mostly were pupils and their teachers. They visited the exhibition of Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum and watched the film „My sister Tykva“.

On January 26 the comedy “The Great Dictator” was showed. As the background of the event the traveling exhibition “Spiritual Resistance in Vilna Ghetto”, designed by the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum, was presented.  

The commemoration in the Lithuanian Jewish Community

On January 27 a commemoration event took part in the Jewish Community of Lithuania. The participants of the event saw the presentation of the project implemented by the Tolerance education center of Vilniaus Viršuliškių secondary school. Also the presentation of the book „The ghetto in my city“ was organized. At the presentation the documentary movie „The (im)possible escapes. Bricha“ was shown and the the former ghetto prisionier who had an opportunity to participate as a guest shared her memories. 14 representatives from the embassies in Lithuania participated in the commemoration of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The ideas about the meaning of the day were shared by Mr. Simonas Alperavičius, chairman of Lithuanian Jewish Community, Mr. J.E. Chen IVRI APTER, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the State of Israel, Mr. Jonathan Brent, the Executive Director of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and Mrs. Ingrida Vilkienė, the Coordinator for Education projects of the International Historical Commission.
