Seminar for Teachers on the History and Genocide of the Roma in Lithuania

A seminar entitled “The Road of Memory: Learning and Teaching Roma History in Schools” was held in Vilnius on Nov. 17-18, 2025.

Twenty-one teachers from all over Lithuania participated in the seminar. During the seminar, the teachers attended lectures on the history and culture of the Roma people, met with and had a discussion with a representative of the Roma community, and participated in a screening and discussion of the film The Black Bird. A trip was also organized to the Paneriai Memorial, where some of Lithuania’s Roma were killed during World War II.

Participants were given recommendations on how to teach about the Roma genocide, which were compiled by education experts from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The recommendations, titled “Teaching About the Persecution and Genocide of the Roma During the Nazi Era,” aim to assist teachers in educating their students about the persecution and genocide.

The seminar was organized by the Department of National Minorities of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, in cooperation with the Faculty of Communication at Vilnius University and the International Commission Secretariat.
