An Introduction to Yad Vashem – a seminar for teachers in Kaunas

On 18 August, a seminar for teachers was held in Kaunas, aimed at introducing them to Yad Vashem – the global organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the Holocaust.

On 18 August 2026, a seminar entitled ‘An Introduction to the Methodological Recommendations for Educational Institutions from the International School of the Holocaust – Yad Vashem (Israel)’ took place at St. Ignatius Loyola College in Kaunas. The seminar was organized by the Secretariat of the International Commission for Lithuanian teachers and education professionals, who have been invited to participate in an international seminar in Budapest from 26 to 29 October. This seminar in Hungary (in English) is organized by Yad Vashem – the International School for Holocaust Studies in Israel – and is intended for European teachers who have not yet participated in training programs run by this institution. The seminar in Kaunas aimed to introduce the Yad Vashem institution and explain the long-standing cooperation between Yad Vashem and the International Commission to teachers. Teachers were introduced to the Yad Vashem website, database, and methodological guidelines for teaching about the Holocaust.

Later, the teachers visited the Kaunas synagogue, where they learned about its construction and how it survived the Nazi occupation and the Soviet era. The head of the Kaunas Jewish religious community showed them portraits of rabbis painted by the artist Kęstutis Milkevičius, which are displayed in the synagogue’s museum.

Teachers from Kaunas, Kelmė, Kuliai (Plungė District), Mažeikiai, Marijampolė, Turgeliai (Šalčininkai District), and Vilnius attended the seminar. Most of the participating educators are from schools with Tolerance Education Centers.
