Commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Lithuanian educational institutions

From 22 to 26 January, Lithuanian schools held lessons and events to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

On 27 January 1945, at the end of the Second World War, the largest concentration and mass extermination camp created by Nazi Germany, Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, where more than one million people were killed, was liberated. On 1 November 2005, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 27 January as the annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Although 27 January is not included in the list of historical commemoration days in Lithuania, for more than ten years the Secretariat of the International Commission has been inviting general education institutions and tolerance education centres to organise commemorations, special lessons, film screenings and discussions, and to create drawings, posters or installations.

Every year, the Secretariat of the International Commission organises an artistic conference for the communities of tolerance education centres. This year, representatives of 13 Lithuanian schools took part in the conference, but not all of them were able to attend. Therefore, some schools are organising the commemorations in their surroundings with the participation of the local community (students and teachers).

We invite you to take a look at what schools are doing to commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Read about the activities here.
