Introduction to Litvaks who wrote in Yiddish – at a seminar for teachers in Alytus

On 21 November a seminar for teachers about famous Litvak writers, who wrote in Yiddish, was held at Jotvingių gymnasium in Alytus.

During a one-day seminar “Pages of the Jewish history. Introduction to the Yiddish language and literature” was attended by a large number of teachers from Kaunas, Alytus and their districts as well as other towns: Balbieriškis, Veiveriai. At the beginning of the seminar, Ingrida Vilkienė, Coordinator of education programs at the International Commission, briefly introduced the story of the Holocaust survivor, Fania Brancovskaya. Teachers were shown an excerpt from a film “We remainrd human” by Yad Vashem, the International Holocaust Studies School. At the beginning of this film, Fania Brancovskaja tells about the Yiddish language she spoke at her parents’ home.

During the seminar, lectures on the Yiddish writers – Litvaks, were delivered by dr. Mordehay Yushkovsky (Israel). The lecturer presented not only the Litvaks’ works, but also told witty stories from their lives, read excerpts from their creative works and told about their destinies and cultural heritage.

The seminar was organized by the Secretariat of the International Commission together with the Tolerance education center of Jotvingių gymnasium in Alytus and the International Yiddish center of the World Jewish Congress in Vilnius.
